FRPS Panel
Statement of Intent – “Suburban portraits are a series of thought provoking vignettes detailing the diverse lives of people who live, work and beg on the streets of Great Britain. This disparate group are not only cemented by the thoroughfares and backstreets they inhabit, they also share a relationship with a public audience they interact with and ultimately attempt to gain payment from.
Individuals are portrayed simply and congruently within their environmental surroundings. Blurred movement has been selectively utilised in order to enhance visual dialogue while peripheral compositions intensify emotional communication. Solitude, melancholy and anonymity feature prominently throughout the panel.
Alternative lifestyles and a gritty realism pervade some of images, but not all of those photographed lack “social convention”. Individuals are different and each image is a reflection of a person’s unique past together with the position in which they find themselves on the streets of society today.”
Permission was given for every photograph taken.
